A collection of prose poems.

From the book:

The Names of Winter

(Here in this bleak city of Rochester,
Where there are twenty-seven words for snow,
Not all of them polite…  - Anthony Hecht)

Neither one nor the other, we would whisper
the name sleet as a child murmurs mother to
the pale blue glow of sleep through ancestral
dowels.  In this thick February no sleet or sleep
or Yucatan dreams; a thick bed of salt no
match for these fat flakes.  And so too forlorn
loners skirting sidelong past strange
atmospheres.  Cool, limpid hipster snow makes
the scene.  Evoke now the orgy of cream.
Violet granule hammers.  There is no better
movie than the timeless drift of eccentric
patterned doilies through air; a crisp two a.m.
cameo filmed in streetlight aureole, this city
of whiskey and winter.  Castles, cultures,
kingdoms formed without illusion, the decline
of civilizations known as spring eternal.  If
we are to dream ourselves away, let us
dream of this…

In While in the World, Peter Conners' crisp ideas, nimble assertions and surprising resistances are effortlessly balanced against his snap, crack and pop music. The result is intoxicating. " Never trust the hand that bites you/once retracted/it will do it again." This is what compelling art does - it jumps up and bites you. In both poems and prose, Conners gives us a good nip and we walk away happy.

- Thom Ward, author of Various Orbits

A thunder of pulsating words and razor-sharp images cohesively fuse into a vigorous and potent mosaic of contemporary writing in While in the World. This organic and indomitable collection is undeniably a blast for the senses. Peter Conners is fully aware of the power of contemporary language, and demonstrates his ability to command phrases to stand for an agile and emphatic growl. He incessantly allows his reader to participate in a healthy taste of foresight, and does not deny poetic flavors, social consciousness, or acute realism.
- Ave Jeanne, Editor, Black Bear Review

From the book:

While in the World

we walked in your garden
   trees fat with pregnant plums
green apples wide mint leaves - the mint
      leaves you plucked pressed
between two fingers - inhaled - and still
   wedged between teeth & tongue
they lasted only moments, grandfather
