Community Project

WHY?
As I've traveled through this country on various cross-country journeys and poetry tours, I've come to realize that there are many writers, and would-be writers who want to connect with others who value the written word. So often all that is needed is a catalyst to create some kind of literary happening that then carries on into the future.
As an example, 13 years ago I received a call from someone I didn't know who wanted to start a writer's group in a small village in the Finger Lakes region of New York State. Over salad and coffee we worked out a plan where I would facilitate the first few months of a writer's workshop and then she would continue on as the facilitator. In conjunction with the group meetings we would have a monthly series of readings featuring poets and prose writers from beyond the region. 13 years later and this village of only a couple thousand people still has a vital and vibrant writer's group and reading series going on.
What I envision with this week-long Community Literary Residency is that afterwards a vital and vibrant community of writers continues on with more ideas, enthusiasm, projects to keep the WORD visible in the community. Even if there are already established writers' groups, the bringing into the community of an outside writer who has a passion for encouraging creativity in a community, in an individual, can add to the energy and vision that moves everyone toward the future. An intensive project such as this, with community-wide visibility, should draw out many new writers and would-be writers of all ages.
Ideas for Funding
(Beyond Grants)
1. As part of the Community Residency, I would create a chapbook (20 - 40 pages) of writing from my being in, and part of, the community for that week. This would take approximately a month to complete after the residency is over. The writing would be about the community, places, experiences, feelings that came about during the week of the events.
Advance orders for the book could be taken throughout the week and the book could also be made available afterwards at local places. 50% of all proceeds would go to the host organization(s), the other 50% to FootHills Publishing for producing the book. The book would be of the same as all other FootHills books, with quality paper stock and hand-stitching.
2. A kick-off event, by invitation only, at a small restaurant, or even someone's house, where I would give an informal talk and reading. Attendees would receive a signed copy of the above-mentioned book as part of their willingness to support the ARTS of the community. A donation of $20 - 50 per person would be asked. This would go toward the funding of the project. This event could be on the Sunday prior to the beginning of the residency. I envision food and beverages in a nice relaxed atmosphere conducive to conversation.
3. No admission to any events, but always having available a donations receptacle as a way for participants to help the cause.
4. I will donate 30% of all book sales during the week to the host organization(s).
Cost of the Project
Round-trip transportation from my home in Upstate New York (closest large cities would be Rochester, Syracuse, Buffalo.)
Lodging for the week in a hotel/motel conducive to writing and working in a quiet setting.
An honorarium of approximately $350 per day with the project being no less than 5 days and no more than 7.
All of the above are negotiable.
Please contact me by email or telephone if you'd like to discuss the idea further.
