From the book:

THE COLD CLEAN SEA

Along the empty Autumn beach
we take off our gloves
to dip our fingers in the surf
to taste the cold, clean sea
the cold sea that hides all kinds of debris
the "clean" surf of a great trash heap
a shroud for the bodies of men & fish
a pit for the forgotten, the lost
the intentional and the unintentional
for the long misplaced, for trinkets
& bottles & cans, for lumber & rope & line
for glass & plastic
for things of the sea & things of the land
a great pit, distilling
fermenting, dissolving, composting
like memories of forgotten parties
foreign languages never learned
lost & forbidden vocabularies.

When we taste the sea
we taste all that has cooked
in its cauldron.  Taste it -
does it need more salt?
