From the book:
Days when I saw the horizon bleed
It's hard to forget those summers,
the ones long ago, tucked away
in a corner of time;
the ones with green leaves
heavy from morning dew
and rows of yellow corn
bending with the wind.
It's hard to forget those times
I used to wake early with my grandfather
and watch from the doorstep
as the horizon bled,
the sun rising along the dusty road.
We'd walk out barefoot to meet the dawn
and from the hilltop saw light
spill in waves over
moss-covered rocks and treetops,
flooding the valley down below.
Later we'd pick our way
along a shadowed path,
pass drooping plum branches
and towering walnut trees.
At the end of the road we'd turn back
through lines of tilled earth,
warm under our feet
from the now midday sun,
through sunburned grass
that crackled like dry leaves
on a crisp autumn afternoon.
We walked back
through the dense melon patch
that surrounded the house,
picked out plump, ripe watermelon
ready to burst.
It's hard to forget those summer days,
the ones so far away
when I didn't know why I smiled.
I just did and it felt good,
sitting cross-legged in the fields
with my grandfather,
watermelon juice running down my face.
